Dietary flavinoids and nitrate: effects on nitric oxide and vascular function

25 Emerging evidence highlights dietary flavonoids and nitrate as candidates that may explain at 26 least part of the cardioprotective effect of a fruit and vegetable diet. Nitric oxide (NO) plays a 27 pivotal role in cardiovascular health. Components of a fruit and vegetable diet that are 28 cardioprotective in part through effects on NO status could substantially reduce the 29 cardiovascular risk profile of the general population with increased intake. Epidemiological 30 evidence suggests that dietary flavonoids and nitrate have a cardioprotective effect. Clinical 31 trials with flavonoid and nitrate rich foods have observed benefits on measures of vascular 32 health. While the molecular mechanisms by which flavonoids and nitrate are cardioprotective 33 are not completely understood, recent evidence suggests both non-specific and specific 34 effects through NO pathways. It is the purpose of this review to present an overview of NO 35 and its key role in cardiovascular health; and to discuss the possible vascular benefits of 36 flavonoids and nitrate, individually and in combination, through effects on NO status. 37
